چکیده

Four atom optics experiments that each serve to measure atom-surface interactions near nanofabricated gratings are presented here. In these experiments atoms in a beam travel within 25 nm of a material grating bar, and the analysis incorporates phase shifts for the atomic de Broglie waves due to interactions betwen Na atoms and silicon nitride surfaces. One atom diffraction experiment determines the van der Waals coefficient C3 = 2.7±0.8 meVnm , and one atom interferometer experiment determines C3 = 4±1 meVnm . The results of all four experiments are consistent with the Lifshitz prediction that is explicitly calculated here for Nasilicon nitride to be C3 = 3.25 meVnm . The four atom optics experiments and review of van der Waals theory are complemented by similar experiments using electron beams and analysis of image-charge effects.

We propose a new solution to the strong CP problem based on supersymmetric non-renormalization theorems. CP is broken spontaneously and it’s breaking is communicated to the MSSM by radiative corrections. The strong CP phase is protected by a susy non-renormalization theorem and remains exactly zero while loops can generate a large CKM phase from wave function renormalization. We present a concr...

Observation of atom wave phase shifts induced by van der Waals atom-surface interactions.

The development of nanotechnology and atom optics relies on understanding how atoms behave and interact with their environment. Isolated atoms can exhibit wavelike (coherent) behavior with a corresponding de Broglie wavelength and phase which can be affected by nearby surfaces. Here an atom interferometer is used to measure the phase shift of Na atom waves induced by the walls of a 50 nm wide c...

Wave function of neutrino produced by an electron wave packet hitting a nucleus in crystal is calculated. If the electron is relativistic and the spatial size of its wave packet is much larger than the size of the crystal cell then the wave packet of the produced neutrino has essentially the same size as the wave packet of the electron. We investigate the suppression of neutrino oscillations at...

We study the recent introduced dressed coordinates in the path-integral approach. We define these coordinates in the context of a harmonic oscillator linearly coupled to massless scalar field and, we show that in this model the dressed coordinates appear as a coordinate transformation preserving the path-integral functional measure. We also generalize the sum rules established in a previous work.

We investigate the relation between the rank I separable potential for the covariant Bethe-Salpeter equation and the one-boson-exchange potential. Parameters of the two potentials are related in the long wave length limit. It turns out that it is difficult to reproduce the phase-shifts calculated from a single term of the one-boson-exchange potential , separately by the rank I separable potenti...
